Learning from Israeli Peace Activists - Friday and Saturday

Roni Hammerman, an Israeli member of Machsom (Checkpoint) Watch, took the delegates to see the Qalandia checkpoint, or terminal, between Ramallah and Jerusalem.

Here are the turnstiles recently completed for the new 'terminal.' This system has instutionalized this crossing--which seperates Palestinians from Palestinians--making it feel like an international border.

Above and Below: traffic waits to pass through the checkpoint. Part of the wall and Israelis watchtowers are visable in the distance.

In the afternoon delegates attended a Women in Black demonstation for peace in a busy West Jerusalem square (above and below).

After the demonstation, delegates met with Gila Svirsky (far right), a member of Women in Black and several other peace groups in Israel.

Taking a break from a busy schedule, delegates were able to relax and have lunch along the Mediterranean Sea in Jaffa on Saturday. The tall buildings in the background are Tel Aviv.

On Saturday evening the delegates met members of New Profile, an Israeli feminist movemnet that works to combat militarism in Israeli society, at a Kibbutz north of Tel Aviv.
